Change Ownership of a File in Google Drive
If you have a file (or files) you are trying to transfer to another user (IE a Google Meet Recording, Google Classroom resources, etc.) for them to utilize, you will need to perform a transfer of ownership on that file or files.
This allows the other user to be free to share/post/use the file as needed, without running into permissions blocks.
Below are the steps for performing this transfer-
Prerequisite:
The file (or files) in question must already be "shared" to the user you want to transfer ownership to. Please see Share Files/Folders in Google Drive article for information on sharing items with others in our ictech.edu domain.
Note: If this is related to Google Classroom resources, then the co-teacher(s) in that Classroom will already have those resources shared to them automatically upon joining as a co-teacher. This does NOT apply to Meet recordings generated from within Google Classroom - those go straight to the Drive of the owner of the Google Classroom itself/the person who created the meet link in the classroom and thus the meet recording files will need to be shared before ownership can be transferred.
Log in to drive.google.com with your ictech.edu account
2. Locate the file you wish to transfer ownership of
3. Right-click on the file
4. Select "Share+" from the menu that comes up
5. You should see the people it has been shared with and what their level of permissions are, as well as yourself as "owner"
Please refer to Share Files/Folders in Google Drive article for more info on sharing & permissions
6. Click on the permissions level next to the person that you want to transfer ownership to
7. Choose the "Transfer ownership" option, as shown below
8. A warning will come up telling you that you are transferring ownership which means you could ultimately be removed by the new owner. Accept this warning, if you are for sure comfortable with giving up ownership of that file.
Note: You will not be automatically removed from a file you transfer ownership on. The owner would need to purposely manually remove you.
9. A notification email will be sent to the person you have made the new owner (example shown below) with the file attached
Simulaneously, you will see that the "owner" under the Share window is now changed accordingly.
10. You have officially transferred ownership of a file!
